Artifact 1. Integrated Thematic Unit
Access my ITU
Artifact Description:
In Summer 2021, I created an ITU (Integrated Thematic Unit) as the project for the GILT 520 Technology Across the Curriculum with Dr.Kush. I used Wix web editor to create the ITU which is an introductory unit lesson to students who are interested in learning Chinese or beginner students in Chinese as a Second Language (CSL). Students are expected to learn the culture of Chinese characters and to read and write a few Chinese characters.
Reflection and Rationale:
This artifact demonstrated the ability to create instructional materials and learning environments using a variety of systems approaches. The approaches I used included project-based learning, inquiry-based learning, community learning, educational gaming, research-based approaches, and assessment. I used a variety of instructional strategies in the ITU such as individualized instruction, enrichment, and discovery learning. I embedded interactive activities such as Padlet and Quizlet games into the website so that students will engage in these learning activities. I designed a culminating activity that requires students to conduct research through Twitter and to create a 3D artifact through CAD software as teamwork.
Artifact 2. Dissertation template video tutorial (part 1).
Artifact 2. Dissertation template video tutorial (part 2).
Artifact Description:
In Fall 2019, I created a video tutorial using Camtasia Studio software for the GDIT703 Foundations of Instructional Technology class with Dr. Misook Heo. The assignment was designed for us to practice making tutorials and video editing skills by using Camtasia Studio. The topic was on how to make a dissertation template using APA format. I added different features to the video such as Title clips, SmartFocus, Callouts, and Cursor effects. In the tutorial, I covered content knowledge such as how to change styles based on APA format on a Microsoft Word document. Additionally, I taught learners how to generate tables, figures, and tables of contents.
Reflection and Rationale:
This artifact demonstrated my capability to use a variety of approaches to create instructional materials. The project nurtured my ability to use educational technology to create a dynamic multimedia lesson for learning procedural knowledge. Although video tutorials and resources are prevalent today due to the development of information technology, tutorials of high quality are still rare to find. Therefore, when creating the video tutorial, I considered the audience and tried to make the video easy to follow. I edited and revised the recording several times to refine the final version of the tutorial. This artifact provided me with experience in creating instructional videos which are useful resources for teaching content knowledge. I look forward to applying the skills and experience in making the video tutorials to future teaching.
