Standard IV - Assessing/Evaluating

Candidates design and implement assessment and evaluation plans that align with learning goals and instructional activities.

Artifact 17. Assessment in the EDLT401 course.

Artifact Description:

In the Fall of 2020, in my capacity as the instructor for the EDLT 401 Instructional Technology IV course at Duquesne University, I designed and implemented assessments that align with learning goals and instructional activities. The course objective is to prepare undergraduate students who were preservice teachers in the School of Education to implement emerging instructional technology in K-12 classrooms. The forms of assessment included presentations, artifacts, reflections, participation in the discussion board, group evaluations, and the final project. I provided detailed instructions and guidance on the assessments. For example, the final project was a unit lesson that demonstrates their ability to integrate educational technology into their instructions.

Reflection and Rationale:

I adopted Backward design in my teaching which emphasized prioritizing the assessment process in planning instructions. I started designing and implementing assessment and evaluations when I was a Chinese language teacher. In the past, I have designed multiple types of assessments and adjusted my evaluation plans according to the results of the assessments and the feedback from students. Similarly, in the EDLT 401 Instructional Technology IV course, I learned that I could have improved on several aspects of the assessment for the course through the conversations with students and the grading process. For example, some students were unfamiliar with building lessons in Learning Management System (LMS) such as WordPress and Wix due to a lack of experience. In the future, I plan to provide more resources and guidance on how to build a unit lesson on a website for students. I will design an instructional activity in which I will scaffold their learning process. By doing this, the students will be able to follow my modeling steps which will alleviate their workload and stress. I will also be able to monitor their learning process and to provide immediate feedbacks until they develop adequate skills in building the unit lesson in the LMS.
